SACO, Maine — Defense giant General Dynamics has been awarded a $7.8 million contract to produce Gatling gun systems for the U.S. Navy.

U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine said about half the work for 22 lightweight Gatling gun systems used on fighter jets will be done at General Dynamics’ plant in Saco, Maine.

Officials say the other half of the work will be done at a General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products’ facility in Burlington, Vt.
