UMaine baseball falls to Florida State

TALLAHASEE, Fla. — Florida State jumped out to a 7-1 lead after three innings and never looked back en route to a 10-2 college baseball victory over the University of Maine on Tuesday.

The loss drops coach Steve Trimper’s Black Bears to 3-10 while Florida State is 11-1.

Losing pitcher Jonathan Balentina (0-1) surrendered four first-inning runs on four base hits, including Jayce Boyd’s two-run single.

Maine got on the board in the top of the third on Michael Fransoso’s solo home run, while the Black Bears’ other run came on Taylor Lewis’ sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Boyd had a double and three singles to lead Florida State. Fransoso and Tyler Patzalek had two hits apiece for the Black Bears.

USF sweeps Maine

At Tampa, Fla., the University of South Florida softball team swept a doubleheader with the University of Maine Tuesday, winning the first game 8-4 and the second 9-1.

In the first game, the Black Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four innings, but they gave up six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Bulls were led by Stephanie Medina, who posted two singles and three RBIs.

Jenny MacDowell paced the Black Bears with a home run, a single and two RBIs.

In the second game, the Bulls erupted with seven runs in the first inning en route to the five-inning victory.

Terren Hall drove in the lone run for the Black Bears on an RBI double in the third inning.
