FAIRFIELD, Maine — The deputy police chief in the Maine town of Fairfield is on paid administrative leave after he was charged with domestic assault.

State Police say 41-year-old Deputy Chief Steven Trahan allegedly grabbed his girlfriend to keep her from leaving his house on Friday.

Trahan was released on condition he have no contact with his girlfriend.

Fairfield Police Chief John Emery says Trahan was immediately placed on administrative leave and will remain so throughout the court proceedings.

Emery says the town places great importance on maintaining high standards of conduct and professionalism for its police officers.

He says the department “will take appropriate action” based on the findings of an internal investigation.

The Morning Sentinel says Trahan is due in Waterville District Court on March 22.
