Appalachian Trail in Maine focus of talk

CAMDEN — Dr. David Field of the Appalachian Trail Club will give a presentation, “Through Time and Nature Along Maine’s Appalachian Trail,” at noon Tuesday, March 15, at Merryspring Nature Center. This pictorial journey will start in the southern corridors of the Appalachian Trail in Maine and move northward. Field will provide participants with information concerning the early development of the trail, as well as the plants, animals and geography that hikers may find along the way.

Field is a professional forester and professor emeritus of Forest Resources at the University of Maine. He has worked in Maine as an Appalachian Trail maintainer for 55 years and has served as an officer of the Maine Appalachian Trail Club for 44 years. He is the MATC overseer of lands, responsible for coordinating the management of the 31,000 acres of National Park Service land along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail in Maine. He served on the board of the Appalachian Trail Conference for 26 years, including six as board chairman. He is the author of the forthcoming Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America book, “Along Maine’s Appalachian Trail.”
