Pennsylvania beats Maine for first victory

WINTER PARK, Fla., The University of Pennsylvania baseball team scored five unanswered runs to defeat the University of Maine 7-4 Monday at Alfond Stadium and grab its first victory.

Rick Brebner had three singles and three RBIs to lead the Quakers. Derek Vigoa had two singles and three RBIs and Greg Zebrack scored three runs.

Fran Whitten paced the Black Bears with two doubles, a single and two RBIs. Colin Gay singled three times and Joey Martin hit a double and a single.

At Beverly, Mass., Sunday, Khristian Smith scored a game-high 28 points in leading Maine Central Institute past New Hampton (N.H.) to win the NEPSAC Class AAA championship.

The Huskies overcame an early 11-4 deficit to earn the win.

Adrian Rodgers scored 15 points and Daishon Knight added 10 points. MCI recorded 14 steals as a team.

Jordan Laguerre led New Hampshire with 18 points while Will Davis contributed 13 points.
