AUGUSTA, Maine — A Facebook group has proclaimed Friday “Little Beard Day” after Gov. Paul LePage’s recent remarks that BPA may cause women to “grow little beards.”

“On Friday, March 4, Mainers (especially women) are invited to don “little beards” at high noon, take pictures of each other, congregate during your lunch hour in public places,” the group’s description says. The event boasts more than 1,400 people attending and a photo gallery of more than 200 women with little beards.

LePage said he has yet to see enough science to support a ban on bisphenol-A, a common additive to plastics that some research suggests may interfere with hormone levels and could cause long-term problems.

Other researchers bristled at the governor’s dismissal of what they insist are volumes of scientific studies indicating that BPA could pose serious risks to fetuses and developing children.
