BANGOR, Maine — A city man was indicted Wednesday by the Penobscot County grand jury in connection with alleged sex crimes against children.

Michael A. Emerson, 38, of Bangor was indicted on charges of unlawful sexual contact, two counts of sexual misconduct with a child, two counts of sexual abuse of a minor and possession of sexually explicit materials.

The alleged crimes involved three victims — two under the age of 14 and the other 14 years old, Michael Roberts, deputy district attorney for Penobscot County, said after the grand jury handed up indictments.

Emerson is expected to be arraigned in April.

If convicted of the most serious charge, unlawful sexual contact, Emerson faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.

In an unrelated case, Dennis Wood, 46, of Bangor was indicted on charges of robbery and aggravated assault in connection with a home invasion in Bangor on Dec. 14.

Wood and another man, who has not been identified, knocked on the door of a Newton Street residence and asked for help about 6 p.m., according to Bangor police. The pair allegedly told the couple who lived at the home that their car had broken down and they needed to use a telephone.

When one of the homeowners reached inside to get a portable phone, one of the men tried to force his way into the house, police said, but the resident was able to fight off the intruders.

Wood also has been charged in Somerset County in connection with a July 2008 incident in Palmyra. Authorities believe Wood entered an elderly woman’s home, demanded money and stole $5,000 in cash before tying her up and leaving, according to a previously published report.

Wood also has been charged with assaulting three of his relatives on Jan. 4. He remains at the Penobscot County Jail unable to make bail.
