BOSTON — Immigration agents who participated in a nationwide sweep targeting gang members say 25 arrests have been made in New England.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said Tuesday there were more than 600 arrests, including 25 in Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire.
Project Southern Tempest is aimed at U.S. street gangs with ties to Mexican drug cartels and other drug traffickers. Officials say gang affiliation was confirmed in 21 of the 25 people who were arrested in New England.
All told, ICE officials say nearly half those arrested in the last three months were connected to street gangs with known ties to drug cartels. Officials say the largest such roundup since 1965 wrapped up last month.
