ETNA, Maine — Maine State Police are investigating a Monday morning accident on Interstate 95 that left one person dead.
The accident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. in the southbound lanes near mile marker 167, Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, confirmed early Monday afternoon.
Details, including the name and age of the deceased, were not immediately available.
The accident forced the closure of the southbound on-ramp and off-ramp in Etna and traffic was backed up for miles in the southbound lanes, according to the police and eyewitness accounts.
Members of the Etna Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the accident scene.
