BANGOR, Maine — Eastern Maine Medical Center has been recognized for the sixth time by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for its commitment to the field of organ donation.
At a ceremony Tuesday, officials from the New England Organ Bank will present the Silver Medal of Honor to hospital president and CEO Deborah Carey Johnson. The award is given to organizations that achieve and sustain national goals for donation, including a donation rate of 75 percent or more of eligible donors at their facilities.
According to the New England Organ Bank, there were 32 organ donors in the state of Maine in 2010. Of those, 12 were from EMMC.
In recognition of organ donors and their families, EMMC last summer established a memorial garden in the shape of a butterfly, symbolizing the new life and renewed hope of organ donation.
