ALTON — Learn winter tree Identification using twigs. Examine the variety of bud shapes and bud scales in Hirundo’s forest communities with Gudrun Keszöcze. Bring your snowshoes or skies (or reserve snowshoes from Hirundo). The event is free. The Hirundo shelter will be heated and open from 11 a.m. on. Pack a lunch and visit before the walk, or arrive just before the event, which will start at 12:15 p.m. Take Gate 1 off Route 43 and follow the road for about 1/2 mile to the Pine Tree parking lot. BAR HARBOR — Join MDI Ornithologist Michael Good at 9 a.m. Thursday, March 3 at the MDI YMCA, 21 Park St., as he presents, “Seabirds and Right Whales of Jordan Basin and the Gulf of Maine: Avian Conservation in a New Century”. Michael provides highlights from a recent trip, as he joined a cooperative international Right Whale research team from the New England Aquarium and the Canadian Whale Institute on a journey to the Jordan Basin.

BELFAST — The Belfast Area High School Outing Club will sponsor an ice-fishing derby at Swan Lake on Feb. 26. The weigh-in will be held in the parking lot of Swan Lake Grocery.

BROOKSVILLE — Brooksville Elementary School will sponsor an ice-fishing derby on Feb. 27. Legal waters: Pierce Pond, Wight Pond, Toddy Pond, Patten Pond, Billings Pond, Douglas Pond, Woods Pond, Walker Pond, Parker Pond, Snake Pond and Black Pond. The weigh-in will be held at the school.

FAIRFIELD — A state-approved hunter safety course will be held at the Fairfield VFW hall on March 1 and 11 from 6-9 p.m. and on 5 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Attendance at all sessions is required. Call Don Perrine at 660-6382.

PRESQUE ISLE — The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host a Women’s Climbing Night on March 1 from 6-8 p.m. at Gentile Hall. Members of the community are invited to come in and enjoy climbing on UMPI’s 37-foot climbing wall. Gentile Hall members and UMPI students will be able to participate for free; non-members must pay the $7 Day Pass fee at the front desk upon arrival. RANGELEY — Saddleback Maine is offering free skiing and riding to members of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association on March 1. Skiers must bring proof of membership in the Maine Lobstermen’s Association. For more information about Saddleback and its year-round offerings, visit

SANGERVILLE — The Sangerville Fire Department will sponsor an ice-fishing derby on Center Pond, Manhanock Pond and Harlow Pond on Feb. 26. The Weigh-in will take place at the fire station.

STOCKHOLM — The 75th Annual Sno Carnival will be held 8:30 a.m.- 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26 at Stockholm Community Center, 63 School St. The towns of the Maine Swedish Colony gather each year for a winter carnival featuring traditional Nordic skiing, sledding and snowshoeing events for all ages, along with good food and fellowship. Come on out and beat those winter blues. This event is free to the public.

WATERVILLE — The Muskie Center will sponsor a statewide ice-fishing derby on all legal waters on Feb. 27. The weigh-in will be held at the Muskie Center at 38 Gold St.
