HOULTON, Maine — Daffodil Days are coming to the Shiretown thanks to an effort by one local woman.
Cathy Davis of the Varney Agency is organizing the fundraising effort locally for the American Cancer Society.
“The other day I received an invitation from a fellow employee down in Searsport to make a donation to the American Cancer Society during the annual Daffodil Days drive,” she said. “It occurred to me that nobody in Houlton had asked us for orders so I started doing some checking and found out that there was no coordinator in the Houlton area at all. So I volunteered to do that.”
Davis said there is not a lot of time for her to take orders as they have to be set in by Tuesday, March 1. The Greater Houlton Area Chamber of Commerce is putting the announcement on its website and it has also been posted on Facebook under the Houlton Humane Society’s page.
“There is not a living soul that has not been touched by cancer in some way,” Davis said. “I was counting the other day how many family members, close friends and neighbors I have personally lost to cancer and I stopped counting at 14 because it was getting too depressing. From children to people in their golden years, there is just so much cancer everywhere, it’s like an epidemic, and if I can do just one very small thing over the next two weeks to help raise just a little money to help toward cancer research, then I will be honoring all those in my family who have passed, including my mother, who never made it to age 70 and never lived to enjoy her retirement. I have been to funerals for 15-year-olds and 50-year-olds — I don’t want to go to any more. I want to do my part.”
Time is short, Davis said, so she needs people to call her on Monday, Feb. 28, at the Varney Agency (532-2345) to place orders. Checks can then be mailed to her at P.O. Box 99, Houlton 04730.
