WINSLOW, Maine — A Maine woman has been charged with child endangerment after police said she was spotted driving a van with two children sitting on the roof, wrapped in a blanket.

Thirty-six-year-old Shelly M. Waddell, of Waterville, was charged at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday after other drivers called police to report seeing the children — a 10-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy — on top of the moving vehicle. When she was pulled over, Waddell denied it. She said she was helping a friend, a newspaper carrier for the Morning Sentinel, deliver papers.

The Morning Sentinel reports that Waddell was cited into Waterville District Court on March 22.
