This year’s snow cover demands significant mental and physical fortitude. Love it or leave it!

To help people learn to love winter,   Hidden Valley Nature Center is offering a three-day winter camping skills course as well as trails open daily for skiing.

Maine guide David Butler will lead a three-day, two-night “Introduction to Winter Camping” course Friday-Sunday, Mar. 11-13. Winter camping can be a fun-filled adventure. The solitude and silence of a moon-lit night in February offers beauty and awareness about the outdoors during the season that can be the least appreci-ated by outdoor enthusiasts.

Of course, without proper preparation and respect for what a Maine winter might deliver, it could turn into an unpleasant experience. This course will provide information about the skills needed for an enjoyable winter camping experience.

The majority of the time will be spent outside. Students will build a quinzee snow shelter and have the opportunity to spend the night. A yurt will also available. The course will cost $125 for HVNC supporters and $150 for all others. Register with David Butler at or by calling 877-632-2663. printed on March 22, 2017
