UM women’s hockey team secures playoff berth

ORONO — Jennie Gallo scored off a Kavia Kaluzny assist with 1:51 remaining in overtime to lead the University of Maine past fourth-ranked Boston University 3-2  in an Hockey East women’s hockey game at Alfond Arena Saturday.

The win, coupled with a New Hampshire loss to Boston College, helped the Black Bears secure the sixth and final spot in the Hockey East playoffs. Maine’s 2-1 edge over UNH broke the tie for the sixth seed.

Maine will travel to No. 3 Providence College Saturday in search of its first-ever tournament victory (0-3).

Dawn Sullivan and Brittany Dougherty scored second-period goals to put the 12-16-5 Black Bears up 2-1. Danielle Ward and Chloe Tinker had the assists.

Jenn Wakefield scored in the first period for the 25-5-4 Terriers. Tara Watchorn scored with an assist from Catherine Ward less than a minute into the third to tie it at 2-2.

Maine’s Brittany Ott stopped 31 of 33 shots while Kerrin Sperry turned away 19 of 22 shots for BU.
