BANGOR — So many times it comes down to basics, especially when tourney jitters and nerves can get the best of even the most talented players in the Eastern Maine quarterfinal basketball games.

Saturday night was no exception as both the No. 6 Deer Isle-Stonington girls and the No. 2 Central Aroostook girls from Mars Hill won their opening games at the Bangor Auditorium with defense, rebounding and foul shooting.

In the early evening game, the Mariners used an 11-0 scoring run in the third period to retake a lead they wouldn’t give up en route to a 42-36 upset over No. 3 Schenck of East Millinocket. In the late game, the Central Aroostook Panthers used a halfcourt press to harass No. 7 Shead of East Machias into 32 turnovers and run away with a 74-38 victory.

The 17-2 Mariners and 15-4 Panthers will meet Thursday in a 2 p.m. semifinal game. Schenck finishes up 13-6 while Shead winds up with an 11-8 mark.

IN THE EARLY GAME, Janelle Ciomei scored 12 points and Britnie Jones contributed 11 points and eight rebounds to lead the Mariners, who committed 20 turnovers to Schenck’s 26 and outrebounded the Wolverines 37-18 overall.

Chelsea Brown led the Mariners with nine boards to go with eight points while Heidi Brewer chipped in with six rebounds and a game-high five steals.

Freshman Katie Stanley led Schenck with 14 points while classmate Morgan Thompson finished with nine points, seven boards and three blocks.

IN THE LATE GAME, the Panthers sprinted out of the pregame warmups to build a 20-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

The Panthers outrebounded Shead 29-25 overall, but 16-5 on the offensive boards.

Vicki McIntyre led the way with 28 points, nine rebounds and three assists, but the Panthers had plenty of contributors. Rachael Grew had 19 points while Kristen Long finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds and five steals.

Kirby McPhail was the point leader for Shead with nine points. Vanessa Patterson had six points, five rebounds, a steal and a block.
