Boat runs aground off South Portland

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — The U.S. Coast Guard is monitoring a fishing boat that ran aground, near Danford Cove and was carrying about 400 gallons of diesel fuel.

The Coast Guard says the boat, called the Rachel T, ran around at about 4:45 a.m. Saturday and the four crew members aboard made it out safely.

By Saturday afternoon, the boat had been towed to Willard Beach in South Portland. Authorities are waiting for low tide at 5:40 p.m. to patch the boat so it can be towed to Gowen Marine in Portland.

Danford Cove is part of the narrows between Cushing Island and the mainland along South Portland and Cape Elizabeth.

There was no immediate evidence of pollution, but crews set up a boom to keep any leaked fuel from contaminating the environment.
