CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine — The Sugarloaf ski area hopes to reopen a lift that failed in late December, injuring eight skiers who fell to the ground below.

Load tests performed Friday on the chairlift showed no mechanical concerns. The resort expects to continue tests this weekend.

Once the tests are completed, the lift will need its operating license reinstated before it can reopen.

On Dec. 30, a lift cable popped out of place, causing five chairs to plummet 25 to 35 feet to the ground. The lift has been closed since then.

It was the worst accident in the resort’s 60-year history. Sugarloaf is located 120 miles north of Portland in Carrabassett Valley. printed on April 27, 2017
