BANGOR, Maine — Maine State Police arrested a Greenbush man Thursday afternoon after reportedly finding child pornography on his computers.

John Wilson, 23, was arrested Thursday afternoon on a charge of possessing sexually explicit material, a Class C felony, after state police raided his Middle River Road home and seized his computers and cell phones, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Friday.

“They found [sexually explicit] images immediately and then seized the equipment,” he said. He said Wilson’s hard drives now are being analyzed by the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit in Vassalboro.

According to McCausland, investigators believe that Wilson posted child pornography on as many as 15 Facebook accounts he created over the past year. Wilson’s alleged criminal activity was reported to authorities by personnel from the social networking site as well as members of the public over the past month.

“Facebook has been dealing with him on and off,” McCausland said. “Facebook would find a site and take the site down, and he would go ahead and set up a new one.”

It was not immediately clear whether any of the images portrayed children from Maine.

“This will all be cataloged once the hard drives are analyzed,” McCausland said.

McCausland said Friday that child pornography cases in Maine typically involve perpetrators who use private peer-to-peer networks exclusively used for that purpose.

“I think this may be the first where it’s been this public,” he said.

Wilson, who resides with his parents and has no prior criminal history, was released on $60 cash bail and is scheduled to make an appearance at the Penobscot County Judicial Center on May 12, a jail official confirmed Friday.

$60 cash bail!!! When are crimes against children going to taken seriously? Can lose that smirk on his face too.

  • Anonymous

WTF?!?! $60 dollars cash bail on child porn charges get real and the poor saps that got caught with six pot plants the other day had to pay a lot more than that no doubt and was labeled a growing operation. Talk about laws on the books that need changing!

  • Anonymous

In my view, there is nothing more vicious and outrageous than the abuse, exploitation and harm of the most vulnerable members of our society, and I firmly believe that our nation’s laws and resources need to reflect the seriousness of these terrible crimes.

  • Anonymous

    I could not agree more.
That smirk on his face is sickening. What a lack of moral character. Sickening, very troubling….

  • Anonymous

Why would anyone bother to download child-pornography pictures in the first place is outside my thinking range. With so many previous reports of others (in Maine) who did the same thing, they got caught and paid a dear personal and public price for their actions. The Facebook along with other social network principal has been abused severely, I feel. My family does not subscribe to any of them, plus all computers in the home are in one room used for communications, study, correspondence and business and so forth. This way, we control computer use. It is appropriate that Facebook and people reported the activity of this guy.

    $60.00 cash bail….what an insult…..

  • Anonymous

I just don’t get why you set bail at all if you are going to make it $60. Whats the purpose? Maybe they left out a couple of zeros…..I guess 6 pot plants poses more of a threat to society than child porn….go figure

  • Anonymous

Horrific. Penalties need to be made much harsher on someone like this. $60 bail is an absolute slap in the face. $250,000 bail/20 years minimum. Never allowed near the medium of abuse again.

I would suggest writing Augusta, but from past experiences I would say that might not be doing any good…if you deliver a shipment of whoopie pies however, they might change some laws on this.

They shouldn’t have even put him in cuffs and sent him to jail, clear waste of dollars on this one.

No wonder he smiled for the camera….

  • Anonymous

They let him out on $60 apparently, odds of Jail don’t look that good, no prior history, lives with parents even, as much as I love to see him go to jail, if he goes to jail, he will be out in such short time it will be a complete waste of dollars put on this.

  • HowdyNeighbor

When he gets out of prison, he’ll likely move to Bangor, the Sex Offender Capital of Maine. See: protectbangorkids (dot) com

You should all contact LePage and demand he do something about the higher number of sex offenders that are littering our state. Let the drug dealers out of prison and fill the prisons with child molesting scum.

The $60 is to pay a bail bondsman to come to the jail and make out the papers. Non-refundable. That means he would have been released either on unsecured bail or personal recognisance… in other words he promised to show up for court. Good job getting them off the street…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WUXQMOMFW26EODLA7I3WZLSNPM Jeff C

John, obviously you are not very bright. You actually clicked “Like” on a porn website? and a childporn website at that? You deserve to go to jail because you are a pervert, you deserve to go to jail because you obviously need several years away from ANY child. But you do not deserve the free schooling they give you in prison because i am afraid that you might actually get smart enough to NOT click “Like” next time making it more difficult for the cops to find you.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WUXQMOMFW26EODLA7I3WZLSNPM Jeff C

Well honestly this totally sucks, cause as i have mentioned on here several times, i got nailed for my first ever ” Seat Belt” violation and the damn thing cost me 75.00. What a total crock of the justice system.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WUXQMOMFW26EODLA7I3WZLSNPM Jeff C

He better hope he doesnt run into me on the streets. I have a pretty good memory for faces…and i can guarantee he wont have that smirk on his face after it get him to take a swing at me.

Once again, sorry, but you can thank our lovely DA for that one. Almy and his cronies do a great job of convicting people, but at what cost? When a plea deal is made for scum like this so they turn around, get out and do it all over again, it sure makes his conviction rate look nice, but doesnt do a damn thing to protect the citizens of the state. Almy isnt alone either, its happening all over this state.

  • Tyke

    Jump to conclusions much Jeff?

John saying this creep may have been his facebook “friend” has NOTHING to do with viewing child pornography.

You made that up. In fact to make such a thing up takes a pretty sick mind ….

regardless, if the guy posts 60 dollars and gets out and re-commits his crime, then there will be more severe issues to deal with. the situation is this, possession of child pornography is a capital offence and has very obvious victims, it should naturally warrant i higher bail amount then a class e misdemeanor that has a victimless crime as it’s basis!

Bail is a measurement of how safe this person is to return to society in the event they escape. It is a safety net to be sure the person will appear for the charges and receive the punishment. How can a $60.00 bail ensure this person will appear before the judge to receive fines/sentencing. I agree with the above postings that in our current justice system (most cases other than this one) the bail is a reflection of how hideous the crime and clearly, clearly not proportionate in this case.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Fowler/1505085708 Jim Fowler

no bubba louie, you have your words mixed up. cash BAIL is paid directly to the court system, and is whatever the amount set by the judge is. cash BOND, is paid to a bail bondsman and is usually 10% of the bail amount that has been set

No, bail is for securing the accused’s appearance at future court dates. There are other factors the court considers in assessing whether the accused is a flight risk.

  • Anonymous

no its not a punishment but it is meant to pose a threat to the individual if he doesnt in fact show up to court…I doubt anyone is really going to be hurting to much if there out $60 because they didnt show up to court…this is just rediculous…$60…this man shouldnt even have been allowed bail as far as im concerned…no what if he runs because he doesnt want to face his charges and now that the ‘cat is out of the box’ perhaps this was just the beginning for him, now he is going to take it to the next level…i better not be my daughter that he messes with, I will be the one in jail and it they wont be letting me out on bail

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Fowler/1505085708 Jim Fowler

evert fowle tried to put me away for a year for LEGALLY growing meds for others,,,,since this guy has no past criminal history, as a first offense he will be given no jail time, and most likely will only receive probation and will have to register as a sex offender for a short indescriminate amount of time! WHERE IS THE JUSTICE IN THIS SYSTEM??? AMERICAN JUSTICE AND THE AMERICAN WAY AS WE KNEW THEM ARE CERTAINLY DEAD IN THE STATE OF MAINE!!!!

THE ISSUE IS THAT THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS CORRUPT AND VERY ROTTEN FROM THE CORE OUTWARDS! IN ORDER TO FIX WHAT IS WRONG WITH ITY, THEY’D HAVE TO FIRE EVERYONE,,,FROM THE JUDGES RIGHT ON DOWN TO THE PRIVATE SECTOR ATTORNEYS THAT KNOWINGLY ALLOW BULLS**T LIKE THIS TO HAPPEN ALL IN THE NAME OF LINING THEIR POCKETS WITH GREENBACKS!

  • Anonymous

Its the system…it is corrupt and unrational…I have had so many experiences with the system and how off they are, from my family court issues to road violations, etc and the sad part is that there is nothing we the people can do, there is no where to go and no one to listen or enforce changes needed. The power is in the DA’s and Judges hands, final word, no iffs ands or buts about it. They have lost the rational for justice and its just going to stay that way..until in my opinion, one day(not in my life time) this country is going to get over run by a civil war or worse, it will end up as Judgement day…the people just cant sit and take it for too long. People in power, please stop and use your commen sense for a bit, stop trying to stick to the lousy rules and stipulations, you know there are loopholes, why do you allow them to be? Just stop and do what is right, that is the only thing that should be done. Clearly this kid has some moral and ethical concerns and I understand he has not been prosecuted yet but to allow him right back out on the streets, back to his parents home on$60 bail, well that is just wrong and unfair to the rest of us, exspecially if what they say above is true of the prosecution of those only smoking, growing marijuana, which I dont take part in but I can admit has no threat on me or my children in my opinion

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Fowler/1505085708 Jim Fowler

research my name here on the bdn website and you’ll get eyes full of what you just mentioned. i was run through the system for merely legally growing meds for myself and three others. yet this ripper gets out of jail for doing serious crimes against children on 60 dollars bail!! the bail amount alone is clue that the judge is soft on not only child molesters and pedophiles, but all sexual predators as well. research his track record via public documents and you’ll probably more than likely be more than saddened by the results of the sexual trials he sat over!!! the problem we are experiencing today is bad people, the american justice system is so corrupt from the core outward that it is more correctly termed the american injustice system!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Fowler/1505085708 Jim Fowler

    right!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Fowler/1505085708 Jim Fowler

and the reason why i say to research this judge is because if you don’t like what you see in his track record, then i strongly advise that on his next re-election bid, you people that reside in the county he presides over should take note and vote him out of office. in fact, i think we should all plan on doing similar things just to stir up the kettle and bring new prospective judges and district attorneys to the top of the legal system stew!

  • Anonymous

Buba is correct. The story is not totally accurate. He paid a $60 fee, but his “bail” was set at $1000.00 personal recognizance. He also can not use computers, or have contact with any minor under 18. He will be monitored closely until his court date.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Fowler/1505085708 Jim Fowler

and you feel that rippers and scumbag pedophiles should be dealt with less severely????!!!!!

  • Anonymous

$60 CASH BAIL!!!???? Oh my f….GOD!! I don’t care if it was this dude’s first offense or not…$60…I think I just threw up in my mouth over that one! Someone needs to be slapped…HARD!!! for allowing a $60 cash bail for child porn!!!

  • Anonymous

I bailed someone out on an OUI recently. Middle of the night. No judge no court open. $60 and the bail commissioner came and made out the papers. I asked if I get my money back when he went to court… no… it is the fee the commissioner charges for coming in to fill out the paper work. There was no “bond” it was personal recognisance… a promise to show up for court.

You are right about the words. But I do not think we have any “bondsmen” in Maine. We have commissioners who are appointed by the chief justice of the district court. All cash bail is set by the court and is never for $60. I think the least the court sets for cash is $250… which can be paid at the clerks office during the day for no fee… or to a commissioner during off hours for an additional $60 fee. In other words you would have to give the commissioneer $310 cash. He will then give the $250 and the papers to the court during hours and you can get refunded the $250 after settlement of your case but not the commissioners fee. If a judge sets your bond during court hours at personal recognisance or a cash amount you only have to sign the papers with the clerk of courts at no fee. The reporter has the wording wrong.
    Look up the laws.

Facebook is actually quite diligent in shutting down pages such as his. Anyone who comes across stuff like this, more than likely reports it for offensive messages, photos, etc. It does have it’s down-falls, but it has solved crimes with local police depts by having the public aware of what is going on in their communities. The downside is that ANYONE can access it, and in some cases, this is what happens….they don’t last long, my friend…the FB community does NOT take kindly to these sorts of actions.

Many in this country have lack of respect for human life in general. It has alot to do with abortion. Yea I dont get it either Jim, why should these guys/women get special protection in jail for the wrong doing THEY DID THEMSELVES????? talk about a (bleeped) up system, i say feed them to the wolves and let them get what they deserve, they shouldnt have rights or protection, i know he didnt molest or sexually abuse a minor but kiddy porn is a start, good thing they caught him now atleast now they can watch him… but then again probably not…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1300022637 William Phillips

There should be a death penalty for those who sexually abuse kids!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Fowler/1505085708 Jim Fowler

well, it’s probably all because some bleeding heart had more money than brains and dropped a whole boatload of quid on a lawsuit to get his or her kid protected for being a kiddy diddler!

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Oaky…well then in that case…if there are more unwanted children in our society than would it not create an even bigger problem? (I am not for or against abortion-just to note. Simply playing the Devil’s Advocate if you will.) Do you hold your stance when an abortion is deemed medically necessary, or would you continue to push for abortion to be illegal period; no matter the cost of human life in general?

I do not see where the topic of abortion plays any part in whether people commit crimes against children. There are sick people out there…period…making abortions illegal is not going to change that.

That’s Don for you. I’m sorry he came after you.

Oh, just noticed he went after cher1…that’s not surprising either. He has it out for cher1 for some reason.

that is the sad reality of the subject.

As I mentioned this morning, he paid a $60.00 FEE to the bail commissioner. That’s the standard fee. His BAIL amount was $1000.00, personal recognizance, which means if he violates any laws, any of the bail restrictions, or fails to show for his court date, he owes the State of Maine $1000.00 on top of any further fine a judge might set for the crime. If he fails to show, a warrant will be issued for his arrest. This was a Class C felony charge. I am a bail commissioner. I did not set the bail in this case. If I had I would have place a cash bail of $750 or $1000.00 on him. In fairness to the commissioner who did set it, he may have received information from the arresting officer that a cash bail was not necessary and that the individual was not a flight risk if a PR bail was set. The Maine Bail Code makes it clear that every person charged has the right to bail, except for murder charges. The bail is set by the commissioner at the time of arrest. If they do not bail, they go to see the judge at the next court session. At that point they can plead guilty, not guilty, etc. If they plead not guilty and request a trial the judge will set bail again. Often times it gets set lower than the commissioner set it.
Maine does not have “bail bondsman” as some people have mention on here today.

More and more people have picked up on it. It won’t go on indefinitely. Anyway , the remarks get deleted, showing up the person for what they are.

  • Anonymous

Yes, and they fixate on that , and yet seem very unconcerned about young children in poverty, abusive situations, etc. Unfathomable.

  • http://lighthouse-news.com/ Sue (Michigal)

Not enough remarks get deleted, cher1. Definitely not enough. Personally, I’d like to see several people “disappeared” from this site. :0)

Judges are appointed, not elected, with the exception of probate court judges.

I agree. There are a few offenders who should have been kicked off by
now. But I will say one thing…..it (this site) is nothing like it
used to be. It was even more disgusting back then, with perverted
comments, etc. They did kick off people more then though….more
readily. Some of them would just come back on a while later, with a
new username (handle) but it was obvious who they were. So
transparent! This is not a site for inappropriate personal-type
remarks. Some of the posters you allude to would love to be able to
get away with more on here so they are now frustrated in their
efforts. There are sites available for more personal type of
    comments, not the BDN one.

No one has a right to choose who lives and who dies. A few in history have….Hitler for example. That’s the problem…many don’t respect life and the dignity of the human person. Abortion is barbaric…it’s just as bad as pagan socities offering human sacrifices. Just as the Aztecs did. Just because a child cannot defend itself does that mean it’s lesser of a human being. A child doesn’t have to be unwanted. But in thie free for all society it’s the end result. People need to use self-control and be responsible. There are many people who want to adopt and are waiting for children.

  • Anonymous

It is unfathomable to me that children are aborted and in some cases up to 9 months. Pulled from the womb and brutally stabbed. Don’t anyone post this does not happen because it does. It is unfathomable to me that people can’t see that.
Do I feel sorry for those who have aborted children… I do. There is a tremendous amount of healing emotionally and spiritually and sometimes physically from the recklessness of abortion doctors. And I pray for their healing because I know that abortions can rip apart a person emotionally. Abortions have to be made illegal…it’s just not right.

  • Anonymous

I would agree that many people experience a lot of pain, emotionally
. I cannot speak for all those people though . It is their personal
business. I hope that more people will consider adoption and adoptions
would be not be made as difficult as they sometime are (the process.)
There are many people who would give a child a loving and wonderful
home environment, including many gay couples.

Based on his online behavior, it seemed like he might have some trouble interacting with other people his age and linking actions to consequences. There are too many people out there exchanging child pornography for the police to catch them all, so they mostly haul in the dumbest ones who are easiest to arrest. They will also work hard at catching the worst ones, who are producing and distributing CP.

John Wilson would fall into the “dumbest” category. The walls of his Facebook pages were always publicly readable, and he’d often include photos that he’d used in other profiles, and mentioned his location in some of them. Wilson wasn’t the worst CP trader on Facebook by a long shot; there may have been a few others who were producing the stuff. He was just really persistent about trolling for it and it seemed like Johnny Law was the only thing that would make him stop.

  • Anonymous

This is completely off topic, just to clarify.

I do disagree with you, however, and I will leave it at that. This is not an article where this conversation belongs.

  • Anonymous

He had lots of profiles and a few of them were innocuous and had a bunch of normal-looking local people as friends. So I’d assume you probably just got added to one of those – nothing too sinister or surprising there.

  • Anonymous

I agree with both of your statements. Bail is one of the factors the court considers in assessing whether the accused is a flight risk. The point being made is that $60 is not an appropriate bail in this case.

  • Anonymous

I just hate it when the newspaper reports $60.00, instead of $1000.00.??.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WUXQMOMFW26EODLA7I3WZLSNPM Jeff C

Well Ryan, i contested mine and didnt pay it for four months so in essence, mine was bail as well, but then i went ahead and pleaded guilty since the motorcycle cop was sitting right beside me at a light when he noticed i wasnt wearing mine….Just saying.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Paul-Jackson/1546835208 Paul Jackson

This is ridiculous! Why did the judge bother to set bail at all?
What kind of message is being sent when we constantly hear of criminals receiving a “slap on the wrist” for serious crimes that are committed? Many criminals serve little or no jail time because our prisons are so crowded and the cost is so high. They are released only to wreak more havoc on the community.
Those that are in jail, have their medical needs taken care of when many in our communities can’t afford it. Some felons are on disability for alcohol and drug abuse and we, the law-abiding taxpayers pay for it! There’s something wrong with our system and many are getting tired of it. It’s about time those that govern us start listening to the voice of the people again and start earning the pay and the respect that they demand.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Fowler/1505085708 Jim Fowler

hey paul, the sad reality of this is that they would have kept a person accused of marijuana related charges because his bail would have been way too high. but, let a pedophile or a ripper go through the system and they let him out on 60 freakin dollars! what is wrong with the system?? REEFER MADNESS!! I ASSURE YOU THAT THE REAL REASON WHY THIS PIECE OF DOG DUNG WASN’T KEPT IS THAT THEY HAD TO BUMP HIM BECAUSE THEY NEEDED MORE ROOM IN THE JAIL TO HOUSE POT SMOKERS!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Fowler/1505085708 Jim Fowler

i have made this rather astute observation: some folks in here seem to feel the need to support this scumbag by listing his mental disabilities. well, if he is truly as mentally impaired as they say, THEN HIS PARENTS NEED TO BE HELD JUST AS ACCOUNTABLE AS HE IS! IF HE IS SO MENTALLY IMPAIRED, THEN IT WAS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO POLICE HIS WEB ACTIONS AND CURTAIL ANY WRONG DOINGS!!!!

  • http://lighthouse-news.com/ Sue (Michigal)

I’m also from a state that elected them. But think about it. It’s far better to be appointed, as 1. they are not always looking to the next campaign 2. Politics should be kept out of it. 3. Who really pays attention to judges’ elections?

It was my experience that incumbents back home kept getting reelected because their campaigns (if any) were low keyed, and no one paid any attention. So, there are good and bad sides to electing or not electing judges.

What actually needs to change is the attitude of the DAs. They are the ones that charge people with crimes, they are the ones that make plea deals, and they are definitely elected. Vote them out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Fowler/1505085708 Jim Fowler

well sue, i agree with you on the d.a. issue, but as far as judges go, i experienced a judge that denied my right to a suppression hearing because he was totally ignorant to the situation at hand. that very same judge showed extreme ignorance to medical marijuana issues and laws by publicly asking why my medical marijuana recommendation is just that, a recommendation and not a prescription!! i feel that i could not have recieved a fair trial because the judge was totally ignorant to any medical marijuana laws at all. and the evidence is in the fact that he asked a question that ANY JUDGE PRESIDING OVER A MEDICAL MARIJUANA CASE OF ANY TYPE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN!!!

  • Anonymous

That is way innapropriate to say that about Jehovah’s witnesses…you cant label ALL of them, that is very wrong and I am Catholic but I know you should never say anything like that

  • Anonymous

well then the media should get their stories right because they stated that he was released on 60$ cash bail

  • Anonymous

I wouldn’t blame his parents, but if this is really a case of diminished capacity, maybe the court could require some kind of supervision or monitoring if he ever goes online again.

  • Anonymous

Obviously it’s not a punishment. But tell me why when some people are accused of murder their bail is set in the thousands?? JUST saying.

  • Anonymous

I can’t believe he has a smile on his face. Obviously, this guy is sick and needs help.
