Icy roads make for treacherous driving, lead to multiple crashes

BANGOR, Maine — Before temperatures rose above freezing in eastern Maine Friday morning, drivers had to deal with treacherous, icy roads.

Between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., five crashes were reported to the Washington County Regional Communications Center, including a rollover in Trescott, a car in an embankment on Route 1 in Edmunds, two accidents in Calais and another crash on Route 1 in Pembroke.

None of the crashes resulted in injuries, according to WCRCC.

A section of Route 9 near the Back Road in Township 28 in Hancock County had to be shut down briefly midmorning to allow a wrecker to retrieve a vehicle that drove off the road, over a snow bank and down an embankment.

Initial reports from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department indicated that there were no serious injuries in the accident.

One person in Bangor involved in a 7:35 a.m. crash was transported to an area hospital with unknown injuries, Bangor police Lt. Steve Hunt said at around 11 a.m. Bangor responded to two accidents, he said.

Maine State Police in the Bangor-Orono region were busy helping people to get back onto roadways Friday morning, a dispatcher based in Orono said.

“We’ve had a few,” she said. “None were on the highway, they were all in towns. There were no bad accidents — they just got pulled back on.”

A person driving to work on Route 2 between Etna and Bangor reported that she saw four people who had slid off the road, but none looked serious. A dispatcher at Penobscot Regional Communications Center said the dispatch center got numerous calls Friday morning as people began heading to work.

“For a little bit there we were pretty crazy with accidents and falls,” he said, adding that none of the vehicle accidents were listed as serious.

Traffic conditions seemed to improve by 10 a.m. as the temperature rose to about 40 degrees, though rain continued to fall across eastern Maine.

BDN writers Sharon Mack, Rich Hewitt and Nok-Noi Ricker contributed to this report.
