EPA fines Saco-based metal finishing company

The Associated Press

SACO, Maine — The Environmental Protection Agency says a metal finishing company in Saco has agreed to pay $38,250 to settle claims of environmental violations.

The EPA says Southern Maine Specialties violated state and federal laws with improper storage, labeling and management of hazardous waste, and by failing to provide adequate hazardous waste training to workers.

The EPA says the metal finishing and electroplating facility quickly rectified the problems that were uncovered in a January 2010 inspection. Owner Stuart Gannett wasn’t available for comment Thursday.
