Hampden, Camden Hills boys win KVAC titles

AUGUSTA  — Basketball champions have been crowned in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference as Hampden defeated Bangor 59-56 to capture the Class A title and Camden Hills beat Medomak Valley 66-49 to win the Class B crown at Cony High School.

On Monday, Graham Safford scored 24 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists to lead Hampden by Bangor.

Safford, the newly named KVAC Class A North player of the year, scored eight points down the stretch after Broncos fell behind early in the fourth quarter.

Christian McCue added 18 points for the Broncos, while Brian Fickett scored 12.

Zach Blodgett led Bangor with 14 points, while Tristan Thomas scored 13 and Josiah Hartley added 12.

On Saturday, Tyler McFarland scored 15 points in the third quarter as undefeated Camden Hills of Rockport pulled away from Medomak of Waldoboro.

McFarland, named KVAC Class B player of the year for the second straight year, finished with a game-high 26 points as the Windjammers surged ahead from a 31-31 halftime tie.

Joel Gabriele added 17 points and Keegan Pieri 11 for the Windjammers.

Isaac Greenrose led Medomak Valley of Waldoboro with 19 points, while Isaac Durkee scored 13.
