Will more consolidated school districts close buildings?

RSU 20 in the Belfast and Searsport area has proposed closing an elementary school toaddress a looming budget shortfall. Since the consolidated district has more buildings inits portfolio, it has more options for moving the students from the school that will be closed.
Is this the beginning of a trend in Maine, as enrollments continue to decline? Eventhough the consolidation law did not direct any districts to close buildings, was thisinherent in that initiative? Will education and taxpayers be better served with fewersmaller schools?
