Trout worth $2,000 swims in Maine pond

ROXBURY — There’s a brook trout worth $2,000 swimming in Maine’s Roxbury Pond.

The specially tagged, 2-pound fish was stocked Wednesday in anticipation of the 32nd annual Larry Mercier Ice Fishing Derby.

In the 32 years the derby has been held, no one has ever legally caught the specially tagged fish.

The Saturday event is the Mexico Lions Club’s major fundraiser to provide eyeglasses for residents of Mexico, Roxbury and Rumford who can’t afford proper eye care.

Former Registered Maine Guide Jeff Patneaude told the Sun Journal newspaper of Lewiston the tagged fish is going to head for shallow water. He said if it’s caught, it will be caught in 3 to 6 feet of water.

Last year, more than 500 people took part in the derby.
