Bangor man charged in theft of alcohol

By Dawn Gagnon, BDN Staff

A 44-year-old Bangor man was charged with theft Tuesday after he allegedly tried to leave the Hannaford supermarket in Brewer with three bottles of liquor concealed in his backpack.

The cache of liquor, which consisted of two bottles of Allen’s Coffee Flavored Brandy and one bottle of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, was valued at about $62, Brewer police Sgt. David Lord said Wednesday.

Though the theft charge likely would have resulted in a summons, Russell Johnsen wound up being arrested after Brewer police Cpl. Levi Sewall determined that the suspect was wanted on an active warrant out of Washington County for failure to pay fines or fees, Lord said.

Russell, who was taken to Penobscot County Jail after his arrest, since has been released on bail, according to a jail official.
