Dixmont man critical after snowmobile crash

By Dawn Gagnon, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — A Dixmont man injured late Monday night in a snowmobile accident was listed in critical condition on Tuesday, an Eastern Maine Medical Center spokeswoman confirmed.
Ricky Lane, 50, suffered head, chest and other injuries when he went off a trail and was thrown from his sled while snowmobiling with three friends, Deborah Turcotte, spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries, said in a news release issued Tuesday.
Citing a report from Sgt. Alan Gillis of the Maine Warden Service, Turcotte said Lane was the third snowmobiler in a group of four riding a trail near Mitchell and Troy Center roads in Dixmont when the accident happened about 10:30 p.m.
The first two snowmobilers were able to make a turn in the trail but Lane was not, according to Gillis. Lane tried to correct his sled but instead was sent airborne, briefly getting snagged in a tree before falling to the ground.
Lane was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident but it was knocked off because of the impact of the crash. Though a LifeFlight helicopter was called to the accident scene, icy weather conditions prompted emergency rescue personnel from LifeFlight and Hampden to take Lane to the Bangor hospital by ambulance.
