Should fireworks sales be legal in Maine

Though many different kinds of fireworks can be seen and heard in Maine on summer nights, the sale of most of these products is illegal. Rep. Doug Damon, R-Bangor, has proposed a bill in the Legislature that would make such sales legal.

Is it time to allow people to entertain themselves and others with firecrackers, bottle rockets and other such explosive items? Does the prohibition on sales represent the worst instincts of a paternalistic government, essentially concluding that people can’t use fireworks safely? Or does a track record of injuries, especially among teens and younger children, make the case that fireworks should not be accessible here?
