BANGOR, Maine — Police have a local woman in custody after a report that someone tried to suffocate an elderly patient at a Bangor nursing center, according to a press release from the Bangor Police Department.

Jodi Lynn Holmes, 49, has been charged with Class B felony aggravated assault.

At 1:15 p.m. Sunday, staff at the Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center called police to report an assault, according to the release written by Sgt. Paul Edwards. Officer Kevin MacLaren went to 103 Texas Ave. and was told by an employee that an unidentified woman had tried to suffocate a woman with a pillow before flee-ing.

The alleged victim, a woman in her 90s, told MacLaren that a heavyset woman in a red coat placed a pillow over her face but fled as a staff member was delivering meals. Other witnesses verified the description of the woman, according to the release.

Detectives Tim Cotton and Joel Nadeau arrested Holmes without incident at 7 p.m., according to Edwards.

When the attack reportedly occurred, Holmes was on federal probation in relation to a series of bomb threats she made in 2007.

In February 2008, Holmes was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Bangor to two years in federal prison for writing and mailing bomb threats that shut down three area schools. She was described during the sentencing as having a long history of mental illness.

She had faced up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 per count for sending the threats to Hampden Academy, Bangor Christian Schools and John Bapst Memorial High School in March 2007.

Holmes is being held at Penobscot County Jail on $25,000 cash bail. She will appear in court on March 9.

Edwards asked anyone with information about the case to call Cotton at 947-7382, ext. 95743. If you prefer to remain anonymous, press 6 to use the Police Department’s tip line.
