Protesters in Egypt are demanding the nation’s government be remade as a democracy. Will President Hosni Mubarak step down, as many democracy advocates are demanding? Will he enact reforms so his control of the nation is less dictatorial?

What should be the U.S. role in this process? To date, the Obama administration has tried to take a middle road, tacitly supporting Mr. Mubarak while also agreeing that a path toward a democraticgovernment needs to be blazed. Is this the right course? What is at risk, given the long relationship the U.S. has with Egypt, the largest Arab nation?
