BANGOR, Maine — A couple with a small child went shopping at Target on Longview Drive on Jan. 22 and left the store without paying for more than $1,000 in items, police say.

The store’s video surveillance cameras caught the trio entering the store, shopping for more than an hour, and then the woman pushing a cart filled with items out the door, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said in a statement Monday.

Police released three images, none that shows the child, believed to be around age 10, and are asking for the public’s help in identifying them, the sergeant said.

The images show a man and woman entering the store around 5:35 p.m. from the side entrance, where they reportedly parked a red Ford F-150 pickup truck.

The man has short brown hair and a slightly receding hairline and was wearing a red jacket. The woman is pictured with brown hair pulled back into a ponytail, also wearing a red jacket, with black cloth visible under the arms. The third image shows her leaving the store with the shopping cart at 7:09 p.m.

After shopping for more than an hour, the “female suspect then leaves the store and the man and child go through the register where all the items are scanned,” Edwards said. “The male suspect then produced a debit card that would not allow for the purchase, so the man and child take the cart, now full of scanned and unpaid merchandise, and walk to customer service.”

“At that point, the female suspect re-enters the building and then both adult suspects and child leave the store with the cart, load up the pickup truck, and leave with the stolen merchandise,” the press release states.

Officer Brian Smith is investigating the theft.

Those with information on the possible identity of the two adults or about the investigation may call Smith at 947-7382, ext. 95775. The department’s anonymous tip line can be reached by pressing ext. 6.
