Two vehicles demolished in Machias crash

By Sharon Kiley Mack, BDN Staff

MACHIAS, Maine — No one was injured but both vehicles were demolished Sunday afternoon in a head-on collision on Route 1 in Machias.

One vehicle, a 1998 Chrysler, caught fire after the crash.

Alicia Wright, 25, of Machias was operating the Chrysler and was heading south, according to Machias police Officer Richard Moore. A second vehicle, a 2000 Pontiac driven by Darren Pritchard, 45, of Jonesboro, pulled into Wright’s path in an attempt to enter the parking area at Tom’s Mini Mart, Moore said.

He said that the cars hit-head on, but everyone was wearing seat belts and the air bags in the cars deployed, saving both drivers and a passenger in Pritchard’s car from injury. The accident was reported just before 3 p.m.

The Machias Fire Department was called to the fire, and Moore said he was assisted at the scene by Lt. Travis Willey of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

“Everyone was very lucky today,” Moore said.
