Maine legislators kill bill to ban high-capacity clips

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine lawmakers have rejected a proposal to prohibit the sale of high-capacity ammunition clips.

The Legislative Council voted 5-5 Thursday on a bill proposed by state Rep. Anne Haskell, D-Portland. A majority vote was required for the bill to be considered by the Legislature, because it was filed after a deadline.

The Portland Press Herald reports Haskell says she submitted the bill in response to the recent Arizona shootings that killed six people and injured U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Police say the gunman reportedly used ammunition clips that held 30 or more rounds.
