BREWER, Maine — Traffic into Brewer on the Interstate 395 bridge and along North Main Street was being diverted Saturday evening due to a propane leak at the East-West Industrial park, a dispatcher for Penobscot Regional Communications Center said.

Brewer City Manager Steve Bost said a large Irving propane tank at the entrance into the industrial park is what is leaking.

“It’s leaking from a valve at the top of the tank,” he said about 6:30 p.m. Saturday. “Our police have cordoned off the area. Irving staff are on-site and their job is to drain the propane from the tank. That is what they are doing right now.”

That process could take all night, he said, warning drivers to avoid the area.

The dispatcher said that everywhere within 2,000 square feet of the site was evacuated and traffic was being diverted. The call for police assistance was made at around 4:15 p.m., she said.

The East-West Industrial Park is home to Irving Propane, Maine OXY and other businesses.

Bangor police, assisting the Maine State Police, were diverting traffic along the Bangor side of the highway bridge around 6 p.m. Saturday.
