Rockland lighthouse museum features Super Bowl exhibit

ROCKLAND — The Maine Lighthouse Museum has opened a temporary Super Bowl exhibit to coincide with pro football’s premier annual event.

Tim Harrison, editor and publisher of Lighthouse Digest magazine, started up his collection of items from Super Bowl XXXVII (San Diego) in 2003 after NFL-commissioned graphics designer Daniel Simon chose San Diego’s famous historic landmark (the Old Point Loma Lighthouse) to be in the game’s official logo.

When Harrison found out the lighthouse would be featured in the Super Bowl emblem, he wrote to NFL officials and asked if they’d donate some Super Bowl items with the lighthouse emblem on them to Rockland’s Museum of Lighthouse History, located at One Park Drive.

“I never thought I’d hear from them, but I figured it was worth a try,” Harrison said. “Then one day in the mail came this giant banner or flag, one of only a few that had flown high above Qualcomm Stadium for the big game.”

Along with the flag, a football with the emblem was also sent by the NFL. Other items and souvenirs in Harrison’s display collection weren’t as easy to obtain because he had to buy them and most of them came at a high cost. In April 2007, American Lighthouse Foundation officials decided they could no longer afford to operate their own museum and thousands of items from the museum were merged into those on display at the Maine Lighthouse Museum.

Harrison hopes many people will visit the museum to view the Super Bowl exhibit and learn more about lighthouses and the roles they play. Also, since most items from Super Bowl XXXVII can now be purchased for reasonable prices on the Internet, he hopes some people will purchase items and donate them to the Museum so he can expand the exhibit each year.

The museum is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays.

This year’s Super Bowl is set for Feb. 6 in Dallas at 6:15 p.m. when the Pittsburgh Steelers will take on the Green Bay Packers.
