Inmate indicted in jailhouse home-brew case

DOVER-FOXCROFT,  Maine — A Milo man who allegedly attempted to set fire to a mobile home in Milo and a federal inmate who allegedly started a home-brew operation in Piscataquis County Jail were among 14 people indicted Thursday by the Piscataquis County grand jury.

Robert Anthony Desjardins, 42, of Milo was indicted on charges of arson, aggravated criminal mischief, reckless conduct and criminal mischief. Desjardins, who was on probation, became angry with a woman he knew and allegedly tried to burn down her mobile home, Piscataquis County District Attorney R. Christopher Almy said Thursday.

Almy said the woman was able to put the fire out before it advanced too far, but it did cause damage. The State Fire Marshal’s Office was involved in the investigation, he said.

The federal inmate, James F. Mills, 40, was indicted on charges of trafficking in prison contraband, trafficking in an alcoholic beverage in an adult correctional facility and carrying a concealed weapon.

Almy said Mills was using fruit and sugar to start a home-brew operation in the jail and also had a razor blade.

Mills is a transfer inmate serving time in the county jail after being convicted in federal court of selling narcotics, according to a jail official.

Also Thursday, Peter W. Smallidge, 77, of Mount Desert Island was indicted on his birthday on burglary, aggravated criminal mischief and criminal mischief charges involving an incident at Pemadumcook Lake in Township 1 Range 10 in June. Smallidge is accused of chopping up his neighbor’s generator with an ax and tampering with the neighbor’s propane tanks. The action allegedly was recorded on camera.

Tessa Herrick, 32, of Guilford was indicted on two counts of unauthorized taking. Herrick is accused of stealing more than $1,000 from the HUGS parent group in Guilford earlier this year. She has made full restitution.

Also indicted were the following:

Dale R. Cunningham, 48, Dexter, assault, criminal mischief and two counts of domestic violence assault.

Ashley Wing, 18, Guilford, burglary and theft by unauthorized taking.

Jonathan E. Hobbs, 23, Dover-Foxcroft, Class C assault and Class D assault.

Steven L. Lake 36, Wellington, criminal threatening, domestic violence criminal threatening, violation of conditions of release and violation of a protective order.

Ira E. Walker, 39, Bucksport, unlawful furnishing of scheduled drugs, operating after suspension, unlawful use of license.

Jeromy W. Libera, 22, Guilford, unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs.

Eric A. Pierce, 30, Guilford, unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs.

Joseph D. Taylor, 32, Dover-Foxcroft, unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs.

Bion B. Hatch Jr., 52, Brownville, two counts of Class C negotiating a worthless instrument and two counts of Class E negotiating a worthless instrument.

Larry Pratt, 42, Guilford, Class C unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, Class D unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, marijuana cultivation and theft by unauthorized taking.
