Maine Senate OKs 3 Cabinet nominations, including Congdon

AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Senate has confirmed three more of Gov. Paul LePage Cabinet nominations, including one that stirred debate over the candidate’s qualifications.

None of the 35 senators voted against the appointments of Bill Beardsley as conservation commissioner or Normal Olsen as marine resources commissioner.

But nine senators — far short of the two-thirds needed — voted Tuesday to override a committee recommendation to confirm Philip Congdon as commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development.

Assistant Senate Democratic Leader Justin Alfond of Portland said there are “major gaps” in Congdon’s resume. Congdon is an engineer with decades of business management with such firms as Texas Instruments.

Republicans defended his qualifications and said he reflects the new direction of Gov. Paul LePage’s administration.
