Regional cheering finals set Saturday

BDN staff reports

The first regional championships of the winter season will be up for grabs Saturday with Eastern and Western Maine cheerleading competitions on tap in Bangor and Augusta.

The Class B, C and D schools will compete at the Bangor Auditorium while the Class A teams are at the Augusta Civic Center.

The Class A competition gets under way at 4 p.m., while the Class D East-West championships will get the day started in Bangor at 9 a.m., followed by Class C at 11:35.

After a clearance of the Auditorium, the Class B schools will compete starting at 3:10 p.m.

In Class B, Hermon will be gunning for its third consecutive regional championship, and coach Kristie Reed’s Hawks have won their first two competitions this winter, claiming the Big East and Penobscot Valley Conference Large School championships.

KVAC Class B champ Medomak Valley and Big East foes John Bapst and Presque Isle are contenders as well.

Sumner of East Sullivan is the reigning regional and state champion in Class C, and the Tigers captured the PVC Small School competition, while Central Aroostook of Mars Hill will seek to continue its dominance in Class D.

In Class A, Bangor took the regional title last season, but perennial power Lewiston looked strong in winning the KVAC Class A competition on Jan. 17.

Hampden Academy and Brewer finished second and third, respectively, at KVACs, while the Rams were fifth.

The top six finishers in each competition will advance to the state championships on Feb. 12 in Bangor.
