Greenville man accused of assaulting waitress

By Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN Staff

A Greenville man was arrested in downtown Bangor early Sunday after he reportedly elbowed a waitress and smashed a door after he was kicked out of the Ipanema Bar & Grill, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday.
Officer Joe Page issued several disorderly conduct warnings to a group at the bar around 1 a.m. and he was sent to the bar again at 1:17 a.m., he said.
Robert Gilbert, 24, was seen by Page walking away and yelling over his shoulder and he was stopped and interviewed. Officer Joe Baillargeon arrived and stood with Gilbert while Page went into the bar to see what happened. A waitress told him that when Gilbert was asked to leave, he smashed the door and hit her in the face with his elbow as he left.
When Page radioed to Baillargeon to arrest Gilbert, he got upset and resisted, Edwards said.
“They had to physically put him in the restraints,” he said.
Gilbert was arrested and charged with assault for hitting the waitress, criminal mischief for breaking the door and refusal to submit to arrest and was taken to Penobscot County Jail. He later was released, Edwards said.
