PORTLAND, Maine — An Iraqi girl who came to Maine after a sniper’s bullet shattered her skull is out of the hospital after her latest operation.
The girl, named Noora Afif Abdulhameed, was 6 when she arrived in Portland in 2008, thanks to the group No More Victims. She had part of a prosthetic section of skull inserted and spent nearly a year in Maine before returning to Iraq in the summer of 2009.
The Portland Press Herald reports Noora, now 9, has finished her 14th surgery and checked out of the hospital Friday. Her latest procedure involved covering the artificial part of the skull. She will have some follow-up appointments in the next couple of weeks.
Her final operation, involving hair transplants, is expected to be done next year in New York.
