Maine immigrants to try winter activities

PORTLAND, Maine — Hundreds of immigrant and refugee families new to Maine are invited to sample wintertime activities like sledding and snowshoeing — and for many it’ll be for the first time.

The 7th annual WinterKids Welcome to Winter Festival in Portland’s Payson Park will be held Saturday afternoon. The event is free.

It’s designed for draw families that have recently arrived in Maine and are experiencing winter for the first time. Fear of the cold weather and unfamiliarity with winter recreation opportunities may keep new residents inside during the long Maine winter.

Portland Public Schools’ Multilingual and Multicultural Center will help to show new Mainers how to stay warm and enjoy the snow.
