A Houlton man took some items from Shaw’s supermarket on Main Street on Wednesday afternoon then took off running toward the police station, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Thursday.
“He walked in the front door” of the police station on Summer Street with store security on his heels, Edwards said.
Caleb Qualey, 28, dropped the bag of cherries and potato chips he took from the store without paying, which was caught on video surveillance cameras, and was charged with theft. Officer Tim Shaw also gave Qualey a criminal trespass warning not to return to Shaw’s, but did not arrest him.
“He was somewhat aggravated he wasn’t arrested,” Edwards said. “The guy said he wanted to go to jail.”
Shaw sent Qualey on his way from the police station and minutes later was called to Shaw’s to deal with him again.
“He got his wish” when he was arrested for criminal trespassing and taken to Penobscot County Jail, Edwards said. Qualey was released at court on Thursday, a jail official said.
