Maine Civil Liberties Union names new president

PORTLAND, Maine — The Maine Civil Liberties Union has a new president.

John M.R. Paterson, trial lawyer at the law firm of Bernstein Shur in Portland, has been elected president of the civil liberties group. In that role, Paterson will be responsible for overseeing fellow members on the board of directors and ensuring that MCLU upholds its mission.

Paterson, of Freeport, has been involved with MCLU as a volunteer lawyer since 2006 and has served on its legal panel. Paterson has litigated many First Amendment cases.

Paterson also has been active in providing high school workshops on the Bill of Rights on the MCLU’s behalf. Paterson is a former deputy state attorney general.
