PORTLAND, Maine — The Portland City Council is going to hear what could be the final pitch to bring the retired aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy to Maine where it would become a floating museum in the city harbor.

Portland and Newport, R.I., are competing to become the retirement home of the Kennedy, the Navy’s last non-nuclear carrier.

Lawyer F. Lee Bailey, a Yarmouth resident who is supporting the effort to bring the Kennedy to Maine, says the city won’t get another chance.

Kennedy proponents want the City Council on the record supporting the proposal to bring the ship to Maine.

The Portland Press Herald says plans call for positioning the Kennedy on the eastern end of the Portland waterfront.

The council is due to discuss the issue on Wednesday.
