Sledders to use part of Elliottsville Road

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — The Piscataquis County commissioners on Tuesday approved the use of about a half-mile of Elliottsville Road for snowmobile traffic.

Representatives of the E-Ville Riders Snowmobile Club had asked and received approval from the commissioners last year to use the short section of the road because a piece of the land where the trail existed had been sold to landowner Roxanne Quimby.

Club member Mike King said the organization simply wanted to continue the use of the half-mile for the next two years to gain access to Greenwood Pond.

The new two-year agreement expires in January 2013.

On another matter, commissioners set the new interest rate on outstanding county taxes for calendar year 2011 at 7.229 percent, the same as last year.

Approval also was given for the county’s $13,500 share for the operation and maintenance of the flood gauges located in Blanchard, Dover-Foxcroft and Abbot. Those funds are matched through the U.S. Geological Survey and the Maine Emergency Management Agency.
