CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine — A 16-year-old student at a western Maine ski academy who was killed while skiing at Sugarloaf ski resort is being remembered as one of the best skiers in the academy’s freestyle skiing program.
According to the Morning Sentinel, more than 100 people gathered at a candlelight vigil Monday night to honor and mourn Joshua Waldron.
Waldron was killed Saturday when he skied into snowmaking equipment along the expert Hayburner ski trail. He was a junior at Carrabassett Valley Academy, whose alumni include well-known Olympians Seth Wescott and Bode Miller.
Waldron’s father is a ski instructor at Sugarloaf and was giving a lesson on another trail when the accident took place.
