Do surveillance cameras stop crime?

The Portland City Council recently ordered the owner of a bar to install surveillance cameras after neighbors complained of prostitutes on the street and other problems. In other cities, like London, cameras are an important component of law enforcement.

Would you welcome more public surveillance cameras as a deterrent to crime? Or do they violate the core of our freedoms?
