Teen, 16, killed in Sugarloaf skiing accident

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine — The teenage son of a Sugarloaf employee has died at the ski resort after skiing into an object off a black-diamond trail Saturday.

Sugarloaf Communications Manager Ethan Austin said the ski patrol took the 16-year-old boy to the first aid clinic while performing CPR. The boy was pronounced dead at about noon.

The skier was a student at Carrabassett Valley Academy, a private ski and snowboard school at the base of the mountain. The resort would not provide the boy’s name.

Austin says the crash happened on the Hayburner trail, which is one of the resort’s most difficult.

The Carrabassett Valley Police Department is investigating. It is believed the boy was wearing a helmet.
