ROCKLAND, Maine — A man accused of holding up a Rite Aid with a machete and a convicted murderer who is charged with possessing a homemade knife in prison were indicted by the Knox County grand jury Thursday afternoon.

Joshua Powell, 23, of Rockland was indicted on charges of robbery, stealing drugs and criminal threatening. The charges stem from a Sept. 30 event during which police say the man went into Rite Aid in Rockland with a machete and threatened pharmacy staff until they gave him drugs, some of which he consumed before police surrounded him.

Convicted murderer Steven Pomeroy was indicted Thursday on charges of possessing a homemade knife in prison. Pomeroy is serving a 35-year sentence for the 2008 murder of 22-year-old Jessica Marie Nichols.

According to Bangor Daily News archives, Pomeroy was hanging around with Nichols at his apartment in Hope on July 1, 2008, and had consumed 18 beers when she made a comment about his former fiancee. Pomeroy lost his temper and bludgeoned and stabbed the young woman to death. After mopping up the blood in his apartment, Pomeroy dragged Nichols’ naked body downstairs by the ankles and put her in the trunk of his car, according to court documents. He called police to turn himself in on July 2 and officers found the body still in the trunk.

Frederick G. Mank, 66, of Rockland also was indicted Thursday. Police have accused Mank of trying to burn down a boardinghouse on Main Street in Rockland on Oct. 5. Mank had spread gasoline around the outside of the building, but forgot his matches inside, witnesses told police. Another resident then locked Mank out of the house and called police. Mank was indicted on two counts of attempted arson.
