1. Gamers, role-players and fans of all things involving dice and little plastic figures have been looking forward to this weekend for a full year: SnowCon, the annual gaming convention that’s the brainchild of Gibran Graham and Monique Bouchard, is set for this weekend in Orono. Friday night, enjoy a kickoff party at the Bear Brew featuring local comedians and bands, and Saturday and Sunday enjoy all the gaming you can handle at the Black Bear Inn. Same-day registration is $40 for the whole weekend; for info, visit snowconmaine.com.

2. Down in Ellsworth, check out the Ottawa International Film Festival at the Grand Theatre on Friday, featuring an array of captivating short animated films, starting at 7 pm. Admission is $10. And then, on Saturday, enjoy a reader’s theatre production of the Dylan Thomas play “Under Milkwood”, also at the Grand, set for 7 p.m. as well. For info, visit grandonline.org.

3. There are some more great movies hitting area screens this weekend. At the Strand Theatre in Rockland and at Railroad Square Cinemas in Waterville, check out the critically acclaimed period drama “The King’s Speech”, and on Friday night, River City Cinema shows the biting modern-day satire “Four Lions” at 7:30 p.m. at the Union Street Brick Church. Finally, Bangor Mall Cinemas gets the Natalie Portland ballerina thriller “Black Swan”, which starts Friday.

4. Rockland High School hosts the annual Trekkapalooza band showcase, with five great Midcoast bands taking the stage starting at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Bands like Sideways Highway, Average at Best, Class Machine, Impartial Crowd and Suit Mullet are set to perform. Admission to the show is $10, and proceeds benefit the Trekkers, a Rockland nonprofit that connects teens and adults in outdoors and community activities. For info, call 594-5095.

5. Finally, the University of Maine campus is a great place to hear some wonderful music this weekend. At 12:30 pm Sunday the Peabody Piano Trio will perform lush, thoughtful chamber music in Minsky Recital Hall, and at 4 p.m. the Bangor Symphony Orchestra will paly its first concert of 2011, featuring concert pianist Martina Filjak performing Rachmaninoff’s second piano concerto.
