ST. AGATHA — The organizer of the 6th annual Long Lake Ice Fishing Derby says that despite rumors to the contrary, this year’s event will go on as planned on Jan. 29 and 30.
“We heard some rumors that because of early ice conditions on Long Lake, some people thought we might have to cancel the derby, but that is completely inaccurate,” Paul Bernier, the derby chairman, said in a press release. “In fact, we have spotters checking the ice conditions on all of the lakes for us each day and we are very happy that the derby will be on schedule and that all of the lakes and all of the [prize] categories will be a go.”
The derby includes Long, Cross, Square, Eagle, St. Froid, Glazier and Beau lakes. A total cash purse of $10,000 will be up for grabs.
Bernier said that safety is always the first concern of the planning committee and anglers should be cautious before venturing onto the ice. Anyone interested in discussing ice conditions on any of the derby lakes can contact Bernier at 227-5252.
A number of pre-registration outlets are open in Aroostook County or participants can register on-line at www.stagatha.com/events.asp.
